Fens Piggins: Origins in Bottesford |
![]() |
Descendants of John Piggin birthplace not known for sure, but possibly Crich, Derbyshire, 1675 % Elizabeth Good 1700 November 19 ( -1738: she buried Bottesford) + 1713 Bottesford |
||||
---|---|---|---|---|
The argument for him being John, son of John and Elizabeth of Crich, goes as follows. The will of Elizabeth P. (1715) of Crich mentions the wife and four children of John P. her son, implying that he was then dead. The number of children at this point fits. Added evidence: the fact that Joseph Piggin, who would thus be the brother, was also a fellmonger, and that all John's descendants for generations were fellmongers. Tina calls this case "circumstantial", but says she is persuaded by it. | ||||

Tina believes this must be an error. The original documents have yet to be checked. Tina's argument: the Thomas born in 1801 could scarcely have married Ann by 1815, whereas George the bricklayer fits into the Thomas-Elizabeth family very nicely. |

Based on research by Tina Negus, with additional help from Renee Redshaw as well as some information from a Groom family tree that is anonymously published in Family Tree Maker's WFT series of CDs: Volume 22. Tree: 1374
Some doubts remain about the two persons called George Piggin at Gedney. As Tina observed (1994): "If George Piggin who died 1887 is the George born 1811 at Gedney, I do not know who the George at Long Sutton was. Consider the Mary Collins who married George in 1834 at Gedney: was she the wife of George of Long Sutton, or the first wife of George of Fletton Spring, Peterborough? Maybe he did not marry twice. It can be safely presumed that the George (baker) who died in 1865 (wife Elizabeth) was the George who had been born in 1832 at Gedney."
