A tanner named John Piggins, born England, and wife Julia, lived in the same precinct as William above at the 1870 census. The family were living at Santa Cruz, California, in the 1880 census, where their daughters Anne, 11, and Helen, 7, are noted as having been born in Wisconsin. The 8-month-old baby William had been born in California. Presumably the family moved initially from England to Racine because they were close kin to William. Anne
