Becklay Piggin: Antecedents

next
Descendants of
Thomas Piggin
who
married Hannah Kibble
at Westcott Barton, Oxfordshire, 1776
He was probably not the first. There is a will of one Thomas PIGGIN, of Stanton St. John, Oxfordshire, proved 1756. It is listed in Probate Records of Oxfordshire 1733-1857 and Oxfordshire Peculiars 1547-1856. The references given are 213.283; 146/1/39. These are for the copy of film and the original held at Oxfordshire Record Office. The International Genealogical Index indicates marriages at Stanton St John of three who might have been his children:
Martha PIGGON 1754 to Burrows, Jonas
Thos PIGGON 1758 to Martin, Lydia
Tho PIGGIN 1777 to Piesley, Ann
On 1780/11/08, Lydia Piggin (widow or wife of Thomas above?) was examined by the parish of Stanton St. John poor law board, possibly after being expelled from Oxford City (see online search at Oxfordfordshire Record Office reference Par/Stanton St John/c/5/b/10).

With thanks to David Burgess who did much of the research on this family, and to Sue Hedges, who kindly supplied further information. Becklay and Steeple Barton are small villages halfway between Banbury and the city of Oxford. Stanton St. John is close by.
