Note kindly provided by Deborah Piggins on J.W. Piggins (1873-194_) (above), based on an extant apprenticeship document: John William Piggins was indentured to one Ernest Fred Horner, picture frame manufacturer, on the 15th of May 1889 with the consent of his father, Thomas Piggins. The indenture was for 5 1/2 years, to terminate on 9 November 1894. Mr. Horner's location appears to be Hartshead, Sheffield [Geoff Lowe says this is a short street just behind and to the north of the High Street in the city centre.] JW and family apparently lived on the land given to charity in 1603 by Thomas Allen of Sutton Saint Mary with the intention that children of those families be bound for indenture in order to learn a useful trade. There are additional details about pay and conditions.
